Why are citronella and other plant-based oils often considered insufficient for serious pest control?

Answer

Their protection is inconsistent and generally shorter-lived than EPA-registered chemicals

Although widely available, natural oils like citronella, peppermint, and clove oil typically provide a much shorter duration of protection compared to EPA-registered active ingredients like DEET, Picaridin, or OLE. Because their efficacy is less consistent and fades rapidly, they often require very frequent reapplication, often every hour or two. This makes them less practical for extended outdoor excursions where consistent, long-lasting defense against biting insects is required.
