What effect can consuming alcohol have when taking Amlodipine?
Amplify the blood-pressure-lowering effect
When alcohol is consumed concurrently with amlodipine, the effects of both substances can combine, leading to an additive effect that lowers blood pressure more substantially than intended. This sudden or excessive drop in blood pressure below the therapeutic target can result in bothersome side effects such as lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, or even fainting. These pronounced effects are particularly common during the initial phases of treatment, following any dosage increase, or immediately after resuming therapy after a period of discontinuation. Patients experiencing excessive sleepiness or dizziness after alcohol intake while on amlodipine should cease alcohol consumption for the duration of their treatment, as this diminished capacity can compromise safety, such as when driving or operating machinery.
